year, so celebrate by joining in this exciting competition. The Top Vase class is open to anyone who grows flowers and you
don’t have to be an award-winning exhibitor or flower arranger to take part. We’ve got some great prizes for the
winners too. Our sponsor Mr Fothergill’s is providing £10, £5 and £3 prizes for the first, second
and third winning displays, and there are special certificates too. 1 The Garden News Top Vase class is for a vase of mixed
flowering stems containing a total of between 5 and 10 stems, taken from a minimum of two different kinds of plant. Please
note that it is two different KINDS of plants – two varieties of the same plant are NOT two kinds. 2 Only fresh, HOME-GROWN flowers can
be used in the base. No dried or silk flowers are allowed. 3 The display will be judged out of a total of 35 points, split into: 25 points
for colour, form, condition, quality and freshness of the flowers on display, and 10 marks for the overall presentation and
effect of the flowers in the vase. The vase will be viewed from all directions. Judging of the flowers should be to the normal
rules used for other classes. 4 Stems used in the display must be showing flowers only; no seed-heads of berries will be allowed. 5 The vase can
be any shape or size and made from any material, but must be in proportion to the display. No marks are awarded for the vase
itself. 6 No accessories whatsoever – such as bows and additional foliage – will be allowed. Foliage which is growing
naturally from the flowering stem, and still attached to that stem, will be allowed. Packing material – including floral
foam – to keep the stems in place is allowed. 7 The winner of the Garden News Top Vase class will receive a special certificate
and a £10 Mr Fothergill’s seed voucher. The runner-up will receive a certificate plus a £5 Mr Fothergill’s
seed voucher. Third place will receive a certificate plus a £3 Mr Fothergill’s seed voucher. They are for use by December 31 2008
with any seed order from Mr Fothergill’s 2008 catalogue. Non-seed products cannot be purchased with this voucher and
they are not to be used in conjunction with any other offer or voucher. They are valid for mail order only. Exhibitors and judges ·
Flowering stems can be taken from ANY flowering plant. · The
different kinds of plants need to be taken from different groups. For instance, pinks, carnations and sweet william, which
are all dianthus, would not be classed as different kinds. · Only
fresh, home-grown flowers can be used in the vase. No dried or silk flowers. ·
A vase, by definition, is any vessel that can be used to hold cut flowers and which is taller than it is wide at its
widest point. · The Garden News Top Vase
class is open for anyone to enter and is not intended purely for growers who regularly display single species classes at shows. · Judges
should use their discretion when judging, bearing in mind that entries may come from inexperienced exhibitors. · Judges should note that
the display has to be viewed all round. · The points awarded should
be clearly marked by the judges on exhibitors’ cards. Any queries that may arise, regarding anything other than the above rules, should
be referred to and decided by, the show officials. Failure to abide by any of these rules will lead to disqualification.

Reviews
Summer Show 11th July 2009
Well on a busy Saturday which saw events and festivals in Danbury, Little Baddow and
the neighbouring villages we were thrilled once again to have a super Summer
Flower Show.
Traditionally the Summer Show is always our smallest show each year, but nonetheless
members filled the Memorial Hall with an abundance of roses, flowers, produce, cookery and floral art.
We welcomed Rev.Chris Poulard who not only presented the prizes but also chose the winners of The Greatrex Trophy and
The Walton Cup. The former went to Joan Brazier whose flower arrangement he described as “like a painting”, and
the Junior cup went to Jessica Shipley who had produced an edible hedgehog which was “just right”.
We welcome first time exhibitors!
If you would like to try your hand at showing your produce and are unsure how to proceed, a member of our committee or
the Show Secretary can give you some pointers.
All the Classes are listed here and you can e-mail your questions to us too!
